Metrolite takes on more staff
Veka fabricator Metrolite Industries has taken on more staff. The business has been awarded a contract by Wigan Council to refurbish 500 flats in five high-rise tower blocks in the town.
Metrolite has taken on nine extra workers so that the project does not detract from existing supply commitments. The 60s-built flats are undergoing a £multi-million makeover to improve both appearance and energy efficiency, using Veka’s new fully reversible system, complete with energy-efficient glass and ventilation to combat condensation.
The project demands more than 3,000 windows and 520 doors over a 70-week contract.
Metrolite, a division of Wigan Council, holds special status as a supported workshop for people with disabilities. Much of its window production goes to social housing bodies, especially encouraged by the Government’s Article 19 provisions on awarding contracts to Supported Workshops, as well as some commercial and local trade customers.
Over 70% of its workforce is made up of people with disabilities. Metrolite works to enable them to participate fully in employment while maintaining quality products and services through business management systems.
