It’s curtains for lace
Curtain walling, windows and doors from architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer have helped to bring a contemporary feel to a mixed-use scheme linking Nottingham’s historic Lace Market with the City Centre.
Kawneer’s AA®100 50mm curtain walling system with fritted spandrel panels, AA®601 top-hung casement windows that were curved on plan and AA®605 low/medium duty swing doors were used by main contractor Kier Marriott on the £10m project.
Kier Marriott design manager Tony Jenks said: “We used the Kawneer systems because they were a cost-effective solution to achieving the aesthetics required in a Conservation Area.”
Kawneer-approved installer Norman & Underwood also said architects Franklin Ellis had “liked the fact that Kawneer gave them a complete product offer on this project”.
The Lace Market Square development by Bildurn Properties, which won a commendation from Nottingham Civic Society, includes 46 luxury apartments and penthouses (more than 70% of which were sold off plan) and retail and leisure space surrounding a new open square and above secure basement parking.
It nestles in the heart of the Lace Market Conservation Area between the city centre’s Bridlesmith Gate fashion district and as well as neighbouring eateries and top fashion retailers, comprises retail units on the ground floor above four floors of apartments and a standalone restaurant pavilion in a 11,000ft2 landscaped central piazza.
Kawneer’s curtain walling and swing doors have been used on the retail units and two-storey restaurant, while the curved on plan windows feature on the apartments that were priced between £155,000 and £190,000 and were designed by Nottingham-based interior designer Louise Hunt.
