johnCheshire Care cladding

Longworth Building Services supplied John Brash Western Red Cedar cladding to Cheshire Extra Care, a £200m+ PFI housing scheme – one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

Longworth Building Services secured the contract to fit John Brash’s Western Red Cedar cladding on four of the timber framed care homes located in Crewe, Winsford, Handford and Ellsemere Port. Over 5,000m of cladding was specified by PRP Architects, which was fitted around the windows and main entrances to create an aesthetically pleasing and sustainable facade.

The project is being led by Avantage, which is a consortium chosen by Cheshire County Council to build extra care homes across the county for people over the age of 60. It is made up of Harvest Housing Group, MJ Gleeson Group and Nationwide Building Society.

Part of the reason for choosing timber cladding was because the care homes had to meet BREEAM ‘Very Good’, which is beyond the statutory minimum of current Building Regulations. BREEAM is the Environmental Assessment Method developed by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), which assesses the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings.
