Mystery of the door handles

Door handles and architectural hardware from Hoppe (UK) have been fitted at a new visitor centre at crime writer Agatha Christie’s former holiday home in Devon.

In 2007, The National Trust, who own Greenway House, launched an appeal to raise £5.4m to help pay for major restoration and give public access to this 500-year-old property set in a 300-acre estate. The construction work includes the creation of a visitor centre dedicated to the work of the best selling novelist who created the Poirot and Miss Marple characters. Greenway House was a holiday home to Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan. The property is now open to the public.

Wessex Ironmongery supplied and fitted handles and accessories from the Arrone 316 Stainless Steel collection, lock cases and ivory coloured door closers.

Robyn Brown, Greenway Property Manager at the National Trust said: “Agatha Christie's family gave Greenway to the National Trust in 2000. However, as the retirement home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rosalind and Anthony Hicks, the house remained closed to the public. Visitors have for several years been able to enjoy the beautiful woodland garden, with its romantic pathways that lead down to the Dart Estuary. Following the deaths of Rosalind and Anthony, the house passed to the Trust, along with the generous gift from Agatha Christie's grandson, Matthew Prichard, of the majority of the contents.

“The major restoration project to the house and construction of new visitor facilities are now complete and we can present Greenway as it was when Agatha Christie described it as ‘the loveliest place in the world’."

Keith Holt, joint managing director of Hoppe (UK) said: “It is a real honour that our hardware has been chosen for this very special property. We offer a wide range of high quality door handles and architectural ironmongery, which meet the latest legislative requirements plus British and European Standards. Our product range is not only fit for purpose it is also stylish and designed to suit a range of architectural styles.”
