Five-axis choice
25th April 2017

Mealey Architectural Facades (MAF) Ltd, based in Carlow, RoI, has installed a long bed Satellite XT machining centre from Emmegi (UK) to replace one of its existing three-axis models.

MAF had originally contacted Emmegi because they were considering a Quadra machine to increase the functionality of their factory, but Sales Manager Jim O’Connell was able to advise them that the Satellite XT was the model which better matched their requirements.

The 5-axis, 10.5m mobile gantry machining centre can both cut and prep profiles in a similar way to the Quadra, but can also accommodate the complex, oversized curtain walling profiles which make up a large proportion of what MAF fabricates.

The 10.5m long bed on the Satellite XT also allows the positioning of the clamps to be done separately from the gantry so that different workpieces can be machined at the same time in two work areas, or one end loaded or unloaded while the machine is operating at the other.

Alan Murphy, Managing Director at Mealey, said that the critical factor in making the choice of machine was the presence of Emmegi’s Irish based team: “We’re a high end, bespoke manufacturer with the emphasis on quality and reliability. Service is very important to us and we were looking for a machinery partner who could guarantee a very high level of service and support.”
