flood“Rain may start play”, says WHS Halo’s Mulholland, as flooding calls for PVC

Foul weather and flooding seems to no longer be an extreme winter occurrence, but a perennial nightmare for the British public. And things are unlikely to improve if, according to the Association of British Insurers, the Government continues to press head with its desire to have built three million homes by 2020, a third of which are likely to be built on the flood plain.

If flooding is becoming a way of life or an inescapable event for some; then it does present the PVC-u replacement door and window sector with a considerable opportunity to showcase its adverse weather credentials. That’s the view of Dave Mulholland, Marketing Director of leading systems company WHS Halo. Mulholland is of the belief that the recent weather changes and subsequent floods create more opportunities for PVC than for any other frame material.

In respect of the flooding, Mulholland says: “The total water-resistance of PVC-u hasn’t been effectively communicated to end users – and it’s a trick that we’ve missed to date. There is no doubt that thousands upon thousands of old front and rear doors will have to be replaced having been soaked by floods and seemingly endless rain. With increasingly extreme weather throughout the year, the sector should harness this ill wind to market the waterproof potential of its products”.

He continues: “It may be wishful thinking, but the GGF should consider lobbying insurance companies to insist that water-resistant materials be used for replacement and new build doors and windows, especially in areas prone to repeat flooding, in the future”.

Mulholland adds: “Water tightness classifications can become a very powerful argument for using PVC frames and doors and, assuming the weather continues to deteriorate; products classified accordingly will have a head start.

Consequently, with a solid application of the quality manufacturing generally now available in the sector; we need to start considering the next generation of weatherproof products. PVC-u’s water-resistant can and should be a powerful marketing message to all consumers, especially those in the more flood-prone areas of our land”.
