“When the sun shines, it’s like being outside”

A large care home dayroom with limited potential for conventional windows is now flooded with light via a six metre glazed geodesic dome from SOLARDOME.
Architect Tim Worsfold had the challenge of bringing natural light into the middle of the 106sqm dayroom that was being converted from an enclosed courtyard at the Brindaavan Care Home, Mid Glamorgan. He explained: “The owner wanted to bring together the dayrooms but, being enclosed, it needed more natural light into the middle of the area.”
Geodesic dome specialist Solardome Industries was chosen to provide the dome in the centre of a flat roof and now, as the architect explained: “When the sun shines, it’s like being outside. Combined with the actuators for venting and underfloor heating and the residents are in the perfect constant environment.”
The four-frequency geodesic dome is 5.94m diameter and 2.4m high, giving a base area of 28.8sqm.
