Yale supports National Home Security Month
20th September 2016

Yale Door and Window Solutions is proud to continue its support for National Home Security Month (NHSM) this October.

Returning for its fourth consecutive year, NHSM is back to highlight the importance of security to homeowners across the UK, as well as helping to grow the marketplace and drive demand for security products and installation services throughout the autumn and winter months.

In the UK alone, there were approximately 701,000 domestic burglaries for the year ending March 2016*, yet statistics reveal that 25 per cent of consumers admit to having no home security measures in place at all.** As a result, national awareness campaigns, such as NHSM, present an effective way of bringing attention to this subject and engaging with customers.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions, said, “After seeing huge success over the last few years, we are excited to be supporting the National Home Security Month once again this October.

“For Yale Door and Window Solutions, alongside our fabricator, installer and distributor partners, this provides the chance to align ourselves with a campaign that is specifically designed to encourage homeowners to assess their security arrangements through their home, right from the high security cylinders and window locks through to integrated smart security solutions.

The campaign is divided into weekly themes, each exploring a different aspect of home security. The first week kicks off on 3rd October with the launch of NHSM, providing a series of tips and advice to homeowners via a dedicated microsite, social media channels and marketing activities.

Week two is of particular significance for door and window fabricators and installers, as it looks at securing the entry points of a home. This provides an ideal opportunity to up-sell British Standard locking solutions, such as the Yale Platinum 3 Star cylinder, Lockmaster multipoint lock, Platinum 2 Star cylinder pull and TS008 security letterplate restrictor.

But this doesn’t mean that opportunities are limited for the following weeks. Increasingly, more and more homeowners are looking to invest in smart technologies, specifically smart door locks and digital door viewers. Week three presents ample opportunity to promote these new offerings with its smart home security theme. What’s more, research has indicated that 40% of consumers prefer professional installation of these devices, as opposed to trying their hand at DIY.*** This provides installers with a good opportunity to increase margins by capitalising on the installation aspect of this new sector.

Week four coincides with the clocks going back and onset of the darker evenings. As a result, this week explores how homeowners can protect their properties and secure their gardens and outbuildings. The final week of the campaign has a seasonal focus, centering on Halloween and Bonfire Night – statistically the worst time of year for domestic burglaries and damage. It is during this period that fabricators and installers should consider promoting TS008 compliant letterplates. The TS008:2015 standard requires that the letterplate allows all typical postal items to be posted through the door, whilst maintaining the enhanced security requirements.

Fabricators, distributors and installers will be offered support to provide consumers with details on how to ensure their door and window security meets required standards and also to promote their services. NHSM supporters will also receive a range of promotional collateral that can be distributed to customers to help raise awareness of the campaign.

Paul adds: “Home security is predominantly a reactive purchase when something has already gone wrong, as opposed to proactively preventing the incident beforehand. The campaign aims to change this habit by bringing security to the forefront of consumers’ minds.”
