Under the sun

The next big opportunity for the UK glass and glazing industry is solar power – domestic and commercial, thermal and photovoltaic (PV). That is the contention being made at the next meeting of the Glass & Glazing Federation’s London Region when it stages its pre-Christmas gathering on Tuesday, 15th December 2009 from 11.00am, in the boardroom at the GGF’s new offices in Southwark.

Dramatically tagged ‘The Inevitability of Growth in Solar Energy Panels – Are We Ready?’ the presentation, being made by Mr Keith Morrison, a director of Romag www.romag.co.uk and www.powerglaz.co.uk, will review photovoltaic (PV) solar energy panels for commercial uses, such as installations integrated into the facades of buildings.  On the domestic front, Mr Howard Johns, chairman of the Solar Power Trade Association www.solar-trade.org.uk and MD of Southern Solar www.southernsolar.co.uk will review thermal panels for heating. Mr Brian Waldron, chairman of the GGF Solar Energy Group will review market developments and trends globally.

The combination of events is designed by the officers of the GGF’s London Region to provide tangible value to members in addition to the regular purposes of the regional meeting, and thus to boost attendance. Chair Stephen Byers believes that it is essential to provide a more comprehensive programme: “Time for all of us is of the essence and the temptation for some may be to take more casual approach to regional meetings. However, it is crucial that we maintain and build our attendance at a time when we need more minds to focus on the issues that face us all. By inviting key experts on a range of topics there is greater justification for members to make the commitment.”

It is not all business however, as members may network with the presenters over a traditional Christmas lunch at a local restaurant in Southwark.

The meeting is open to all GGF members and invited guests.  Interest is already high and space is limited, so reservations are first-come, first-served by calling Peter Stuttard on 020 7939 9110.
