Two thirds back call for UK
window safety week

A call for the UK to adopt a US-style Window Safety Week has gained the backing of two out of three businesses in a poll by one manufacturer.

“The figures speak for themselves, not just in our poll but in the massive disparity between accident figures here and in the US,” said Mike Derham, Chairman of Mighton Products, manufacturer of the Angel Ventlock window restrictor.

“It seems incredible that we are spending millions designing windows that stop intruders getting in yet give barely a second thought to preventing children and vulnerable people from falling out. The USA has had a Window Safety Week for many years and they have only one sixth the number of accidents per capita than we have here”.

He said an estimated 3,300 children aged five and under are treated in hospital emergency departments every year in the USA which has over 320 million population, compared with over 4,000 equivalent accidents in the UK with only 66 million.

Mighton asked more than 3,000 people by email: ‘Do you think we should have a ‘national window safety week’ that highlights the risk and dangers associated with windows?’ and more than two thirds of respondents said yes.

Mike Derham concluded: “Of course, it was only a relatively small survey sample but when it returned such a clear majority, that tells me we have found a strong mandate for action.”
