Clayton buys Romag to form £40m group
19th July 2016

Clayton Glass has announced the acquisition of specialist glass manufacturer Romag for an undisclosed sum. The move creates a group with turnover in excess of £40million but with a declared intention that two companies will continue to operate as separate entities and with the same management teams.

Romag, with annual sales around £15 million and employing 150 people, produces specialist glass products and security glazing laminates for the building integrated PV, security, architectural and transport sectors.

Clayton, with £27million sales and employing 250, makes IGUs and specialist conservatory glass from sites in North Stanley and South Shields as well as an investment in Northern Express Glass in Fleetwood. This equates to a turnover of £27 million, employing 250 people.

The move makes the Group one of the largest independent glass companies in the UK. Though there are core synergies between both companies, including some glass finishing processes, each will continue to be run independently.

Clayton Glass managing director Ryan Green said: “The strategic acquisition of Romag is a great fit for Clayton, given the geographical location and glass sector in general. In time, we hope to be able to co-work on projects, but for the immediate future our focus remains on building both businesses on the back of excellent product quality, innovation and exemplary levels of customer service.

“Both companies have a common interest in new glass technology development and innovation. This complementary focus not only ensures that both companies are a great fit for each other, but also that there is plenty of potential for an exchange of ideas and development, which can only be good news for everyone concerned.”

Romag was previously owned by Sunderland-based housing company Gentoo, which is concentrating on its core service after having to institute a large programme of cuts.

Clayton Glass was this year listed in the London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain report and also won IGU Manufacturer of the Year 2015 in the National Fenestration Awards.
