Blowtorch burglars love
cheap locks – claim
19th February 2019

Lock supplier Brisant has responded to police warnings and media reports of a ‘terrifying’ new phenomenon of burglars using blowtorches to burn their way through house doors.

At least three national newspapers headlined the issue this week, saying police are increasingly worried that the trend is spreading, especially across West Yorkshire and elsewhere around the north of England. They cite one case where thieves got away with a £30,000 car and were even caught on CCTV using the same blowtorch to de-ice the windscreen.

In a letter to The Glazine today, Brisant CEO Nick Dutton again blamed manufacturers and for fitting cheap locks but added that many installers are now replacing them with higher-spec cylinders, which are more resistant to torching as well as other common methods of burglary.

The company has also posted a video showing its Ultion cylinder holding fast against a persistent assault by a blowtorch.
Experts agree that the current publicity might cause other burglars to try the technique and could damage the door beyond repair even if they failed to break into the house. However, a spokesperson for the company added that all its Ultion locks have the three-star kitemark visible on the outside, so any competent burglar would know not to try.
