Affordable homes lead new-build upturn
18th July 2017

Over 30% more new affordable homes were registered with the NHBC in the second quarter of 2017 over last year, accounting almost entirely for an overall sector increase of 11%.

Figures from the organisation show 44,963 new homes in total were registered in Q2 against 40,641 in the same period last year but, out of these, the affordable sector grew 32%, from 9,426 to 12,402. At the same time, private sector registrations – though a much bigger number – put on 4% from 31,215 to 32,561.

The organisation says the continued upturn in affordable sector registrations can be attributed to a number of larger housing associations developing homes for market rent, private sale and shared ownership along with an increase in joint ventures with the private sector.

It continues that over Q2, nine of the 12 UK regions experienced growth year-on-year, with the West Midlands (+56%), Yorkshire & Humberside (+34%) and the North West (+26%) among the fastest growing.

The NHBC's registration statistics, represent approximately 80% of the new homes market.
