From Grimethorpe to Africa

Grimethorpe-based window, conservatory and manufacturer, Sash UK, has won its biggest ever order for one of its large conservatories (known as a ‘luminatrium’) from Equatorial Guinea on the West Coast of Africa.

Sash UK won the order for the steel, aluminium and glass roof from an Italian architect who is designing the enormous glass structure on behalf of a secret African VIP based in the country’s former capital Bata. With a total glass area of 3,347m2 supported by a huge steel and aluminium frame, it is the biggest roof of its type to be manufactured by Sash UK and one of the largest installed anywhere in the world.

Designed to house an exotic plant collection and a massive banqueting facility, the design will offer the owner and his guests a spectacular glass building which will blend with its exotic location and host building, while providing occupants with protection from the tropical, humid local climate.

Sash UK’s joint managing director Dave Ruzicka said everyone at Sash UK was delighted with their mysterious and exotic customer: “This order has come to Grimethorpe from Italy, via the US and will be installed in Equatorial Guinea – a piece of Yorkshire craftsmanship in a place that few of us had heard of until a few weeks ago. Our workforce is one of the most skilled in the world at producing these huge glass buildings and we are delighted to add another export country to our impressive tally.”
