'On the buzzer' for University 'Schools' Challenge

VEKA has teamed up with its nearby community college to bring a University 'Schools' Challenge to its local area.

VEKA and its partner school, Hameldon Community College share an initiative to encourage and support its students, in conjunction with the Business in the Community (BITC) 'Business Class' organisation that they are a part of.

A need to promote and develop Hameldon's talented students was identified, and following a discussion with all school representatives at the BITC Cluster meetings, it was also identified as a development area for all schools in the Burnley, Lancashire area. Gabriella Hammond, VEKA Head of Human Resources says: “The University 'Schools' Challenge event was decided on as it's a great, fun way to encourage this group of gifted pupils to broaden their knowledge of national and international subjects. The teams of students will work together to answer a series of challenging general knowledge questions.”

Celebrating the achievements of both students and the schools, five Burnley schools are supporting the event, which will take place at the Burnley College UCLAN campus on November 29th.

Hosted by BBC Radio Lancashire's Ted Robins, the University 'Schools' Challenge will also be recorded for broadcast, with the winning school team also being interviewed for both BBC Radio Lancashire and local newspapers.

Each school's team will have an individual mentor; a current undergraduate student at UCFB to coach and assist them with knowledge, and gain question practice.

Gabriella concluded: “This is a fantastic promotion for the local area and the schools involved, and friends, family and fellow students are invited to cheer their teams on in the finals!”
