Cotswold and SWC collaborate on bespoke stay

Cotswold and SWC Trade Frames in Scarborough have collaborated on a bespoke version of Cotswold’s HS Sinidex Friction Stay for use with the latest WHS Halo window profiles. The HS147 ECE P1 Stay combines the superb weather sealing performance of the HS Sinidex with smooth and simple opening to all positions, including emergency egress in accordance with Part B of the Building Regulations.

Operating since 1989, SWC is a large regional fabricator of PVC-U frames and a supplier of glass, panels and conservatory roofs, exclusively to the trade. The stay on both the new WHS Halo System 10 Mk2 and Rustique fully sculptured 70mm profile fabricated by SWC is located much further in-board on the frame than other PVC-U systems. This fitting position can present potential problems for standard egress and egress easy clean hinges.

To address this, Cotswold’s Design Manager, Brian Bunn, and his team explored the possibility of modifying its standard HS Sinidex Stay for SWC. He explains, “The HS147 ECE P1 version has a longer first arm to allow the opening sash to comfortably clear the frame when opened to 90 degrees. Indeed, it’s proved such a success, it’s now available as a standard product in our range.

The HS 147 ECE P1 hinge is also designed to ensure easy opening to 90 degrees for ventilation and convenient cleaning, or to full egress in the event of an emergency. For the latter option, the user simply lifts the release catch/restrictor mechanism and slides the sash to the side. On closing the window, the restrictors relocate automatically for complete ease of use and safety.

SWC fits around 1,500 pairs of the modified Cotswold hinge to its side-hung windows each month. Managing Director, Paul Richings, comments, “Thanks to Cotswold’s bespoke design service we can offer a high performance easy clean egress stay as standard to all our customers.”
