Taxing vote
Attending the first meeting of the Innovation and Growth Team on Construction, Peter Mandelson laid down a challenge to members: to ensure the industry is "fit for purpose” for Fensa is urging its 9,000+ installation companies to sign up to a Downing Street Petition to challenge the government’s latest proposal which changes the law around taxation rules for self employed construction workers, that would reduce workers’ take home pay because taxes would be increased.
The government consultation document means that construction workers will no longer be seen as ‘self-employed’ but instead, will be ‘deemed’ employed for tax purposes. They will be required to pay PAYE and National Insurance contributions, and will not have ‘employed’ status. Currently, the consultation document does not apply to other categories of worker such as barristers, IT consultants or journalists.
As Jon Vanstone, director of registered businesses said: “With Fensa-registered businesses representing over 90% of the replacement glazing industry, together as an industry, we can use the real power of our collective voices to sign challenge this tax threat.”
