Hats off to SBD

Two apartment blocks in Manchester’s Hat Box development in Milliners Wharf, using TECHNAL window, curtain walling and door systems, supplied through fabricator Glasshus have achieved Secured By Design certification.

‘Hat Box’ was developed by FairBriar Real Estate, a joint venture between Scarborough International Properties Limited (SIPL), Hualing Group of the People’s Republic of China, and Metro Holdings, of Singapore. The scheme, which is part of the regeneration of New Islington, is a high-end residential development designed by Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher (CJCT).

CJCT specified products with security features to be used. As such, Technal’s PY door, which incorporates an invisible door closer as well as concealed locking grooves for a tight and secure mechanism, was specified for the ground floor apartments and top floor duplex apartments. These features, along with the single leaf open-in and open-out hinged doors that meet PAS 24 for burglar resistance, resulted in the Secured by Design certification.

Technal is part of the Sapa Group and so for the balconies, the C125 sliding door was specified. Alongside C125 and PY doors, Technal’s FY 65 window was also specified. This further helped in achieving Secured by Design certification, as the FY window is also tested and certified to PAS 24 for burglar resistance.

Simon Tuckwell, Managing Director of Glasshus, said: “This particular project required a high level of security and energy efficiency. Technal products naturally fit these requirements, but to further emphasise the security element, we worked with Technal to pass the systems through the Secure by Design tests to give the customer ultimate peace of mind.”
