Exeter Glass Centre flying high

Maintenance contractor ROK glaziers Exeter Glass Centre to undertake the tricky replacement of a broken heavy duty glass pane within the Air Traffic Control Tower at Exeter Airport – while the tower remained operational.

Due the size and its 115kg weight the glass could not pass through the building, so it was lifted with a crane fitted with a specialist suction lifter, and safely glazed into place with a five strong team of experienced glaziers.

Mark Herbert leading the team from Exeter Glass Centre was tasked by ROK to provide replacement heat-treated safety glass, with enough tint to protect the air traffic controllers from the sun’s glare. This was successful installed by the glazing team without compromising the safety of airport users and with no disruption to air movements and flight schedules.

Mark Herbert from Exeter Glass Centre said: “Working closely with ROK we have created and implemented a plan that offered the airport an effective solution with practical cost consideration.”
