Weekly Email News for the Glass, Glazing & Fenestration Industries

From: Nick Dutton, Brisant-Secure

The latest crime statistics from the ‘Crime Survey for England and Wales’ and police-recorded crime have been released by the Office of National Statistics. It’s better news for homeowners with a record low of 650,000 incidents of domestic burglary in the survey year ending March 2017. It’s better news for the industry too, as enhanced security measures are helping to prevent burglars from breaking-in, and deterring them from trying in the first place. Those with enhanced security measures are less likely to be victims, and less likely to be broken into in the event of an attack.

However, the problems with the weak points – doors and locks – persist.  Burglars gained entry through the door in 74% of burglaries last year, one in three by attacking the lock, mostly by snapping the cylinder. As many as 58% of burglaries happened when someone was home, and 28% of homeowners actually saw the intruder. It’s a sobering thought, but as an industry we can make a difference.

Locks and handles are small components that make little difference to the overall cost of a door, but improve its security significantly. The market for ‘premium’ security has really taken off in the past couple of years and it’s clearly due to demand for products that work in real-life situations. Regardless of how low- or high-spec the door, it’s only as good as the lock that keeps it secure.
