Weekly Email News for the Glass, Glazing & Fenestration Industries

Dear Tony
12th August 2014

Why are the GGF and an internet lead generation company getting so upset about the cessation of funding for the GDHIF? (actually the promised budget figure has been reached, no promise was made beyond that, so all is well?)  We all pay for that funding through our taxes and only a very few were set to benefit from it (not the average consumers either!).  Massive administration costs and unworkabilty of the scheme which doesn’t really apply to our sector (we as a double glazing company don’t do loft/cavity insulation, new boilers or solar panels), the payback through energy saving on an average double glazing installation is in decades not years! Only a few companies signed up for it and with this monopoly, they could and would charge what they liked for the same products all companies offer as standard now. We as taxpayers are losing out to this non-competitive practise (not to mention the energy companies getting involved with the expensive loan schemes!).  Expensive ‘Eco-Homes’ being constructed with heat-pumps, thick walls, triple-glazing, compost converters, zero-carbon, renewable etc. etc. come with enough grants available for these items and let’s face it, only the pretty well-off can afford them!

Nigel Rees even states “the window industry has been offered practically nothing from this initiative” so why the hoo ha? The GGF should concentrate on getting the government to reduce the VAT on ‘A’-rated replacements instead of trying to just look after the big boys, that would boost our industry, the economy, reduce carbon emissions and would benefit us all - including consumers!!
