On your bike!
Veka senior technical support technician Pete Chapman has completed an arduous bike ride of nearly 700 miles in seven days, in the sixth annual Burnley FC charity event from Bordeaux in Southern France back to Burnley.
Pete was one of 19 determined cyclists raising money for Leukaemia research as well as Burnley FC Youth Development. He raised nearly £1000 with the overall group total expected to be over £20,000.
All in all, the group had 21 punctures, three new front wheels, seven new inner tubes, one new back cassette and three minor accidents.
The cyclists left Bordeaux on April 26 and headed to St Malo for the nine-hour boat trip to Portsmouth – offering some much needed rest ready for the 300-mile cycle through Oxford and Telford, returning to Burnley on May 3.
The group were welcomed back in style with a lap of honour around Burnley FC's Turf Moor ground, earning a standing ovation from the 20,000-strong crowd waiting for the afternoon's match.
Pete said “It was hard work, but we still managed to enjoy ourselves. It helped keep up the momentum because we were helping such worthy causes and were getting lots of messages of encouragement from home.
“We made sure to say a big thanks to the support vehicle drivers – and also to the Burnley fan who bought us all lunch as we passed through Hungerford.”
