System supplier VEKA plc has been named as a finalist in the G12 awards. The Burnley-based company has been shortlisted for 'Energy Efficiency Initiative of the Year' thanks to a cost-effective, simple system for achieving U-values of 0.8, without the need for ultra expensive krypton-filled sealed units
VEKA unveiled the new and improved means of achieving U-Values as low as 0.8W/m2K earlier this year.
VEKA Sales and Marketing Director Colin Torley explains more about the thermal enhancements: “We wanted to develop a combination of products that would result in an economical way for our customers to achieve lower U-Values on the profile systems they already use
“Although the overall thermal performance of a window is largely dependent on the glazing specification - there are also a number of cost-effective enhancements that can be made to the frame and glazing in order to better the U-Value performance of existing frames.
“We developed a glazing bead to allow the incorporation of 40-44mm triple insulated glazed units within VEKA's Matrix 70 and FS systems.
“Our Technical Department also developed an innovative solution whereby U-channel steel reinforcements incorporating foam inserts are used to fill the profile's reinforcement chamber. The foam inserts are not only the ideal product for enhancing the thermal performance of the product, but it is also a comparatively cost-effective method when compared with other solutions. Foam inserts are readily available from a number of recommended third parties.
“In addition, we offer two self-adhesive seals, one for the glazing rebate and a centre seal that - together with a back of frame adaptor - take VEKA windows effortlessly and economically down to the coveted 0.8W/m2K U-Value.
“We constantly strive to equip our customers with the products, knowledge and skills to prepare them for whatever the industry throws at them. The minimum Building Regulation requirements for Approved Document L for thermal performance currently only call for a whole window U-Value of 1.6W/m2K. But our customers will be well prepared to stay ahead of the competition in the years to come with our 0.8w/m2k solution.
“Although our customers' satisfaction - rather than potential awards - was obviously the driving force behind this development, it's great to be recognised by the G12 organisers for our energy-efficiency efforts.”
The G12 winners will be announced live at the Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner hosted by Patrick Kielty on November 23rd.
