Qualicoat Meet in Edinburgh
9th December 2014

Members of Qualicoat UK and Ireland recently met for their final meeting of 2014 at the Jurys Inn, Edinburgh. Always a popular destination, Edinburgh attracted a good turnout of members, so much so that the meeting room was completely full with not a chair to spare.

The packed meeting started with a warm welcome to members by Qualicoat UK & Ireland President, Alan Maginnis, who was pleased to report that members were reporting a growth in coating work during 2014 and importantly welcomed a further two new members to the association, Glazing Vision issued with licence number 1017 and Sure Powder Coating with licence number 1018.

Qualicoat’s RIBA approved CPD has got off to a flying start with several CPD’s already given to specifiers. Alan confirmed that one CPD has resulted in a major practice adopting the Qualicoat specification for one of the UK’s largest ongoing power generation plants. All Qualicoat members from across the UK can offer the CPD, so drop Qualicoat a line should your practice to benefit from the presentation, ‘Setting the Standard for Architectural Powder Coating’.
Geoff Addicott, Technical Service Manager of Exova, who undertakes the independent applicator inspections for Qualicoat UK & Ireland members, offered his report for 2014. Geoff confirmed that all members had been inspected on two occasions during the year and had passed Qualicoat’s stringent licensing requirements. A further six potential applicator requests had been received which were being followed up for initial plant inspections.

Mo Panam, Qualicoat’s Global President, offered an update on some of the technical working groups within the association. Most importantly, Mo confirmed that the Fourteenth Edition of the Qualicoat standard will be issued this January and will be freely available to download from the  association website. Amongst other technical updates, the Qualicoat sample testing procedures are to be reviewed to make these tests tougher in the future. More onerous sample tests reflect the continuing improvement in the Qualicoat finish in recent years, as some tests results show a very high pass rate.

Copies of the Qualicoat standard, currently in its thirteenth edition, is available through the UK association website together with an up-to-date list of manufacturers and applicators at
