Following the recent study of the smart windows market by n-tech we are pleased to hear that the range of products is growing. In previous years n-tech’s studies focused heavily on the number of self-dimming coatings that were being proposed as the basis for smart windows, but we are now seeing a maturing of this market, with electrochromic glass set to take a domineering role in the future.

In the past it has been reported that smart windows were often viewed almost exclusively in terms of energy efficiency. However, n-tech believes that the marketing story surrounding smart windows is broadening – to combine smart windows with smart lighting, providing customers with enhanced comfort.

Today, we are certainly seeing smart windows becoming an Internet of Things (IoT) story, creating new opportunities for both smart window firms and IoT companies. This development offers much more scope for product development than comfort and convenience alone. This is certainly the case with our core product GlazeAlarm, which is a disruptive IoT home automation security product that allows glazing manufacturers to compete in the security space for the first time.

It consists of a patent pending wireless, shock, humidity and temperature sensor system, which is installed within a DGU during manufacture and which notifies the user immediately upon a breakage of the glass via an app on their chosen smart device.

We have recently showcased the GlazeAlarm at the world-renowned Glasstec trade fair for glass production, processing and products, and a target date for full production and delivery has been set for Q2 2017.
