A group of 41apprentices from Tayside window and door manufacturer Sidey, have achieved pass grades in SVQ level II certificates in ‘Fabrication of Glass Supporting Structures’, after being enrolled on a year-long group apprentice programme run in collaboration with The Vocational College.
The vocational training qualification was based on online learning and communication, with periodic face-to-face group sessions and one-to-one mentoring. The course offers both knowledge of the glass and glazing industry and a firm grounding in the essentials of Maths and English in practice. Although the theory of the industry is important, there’s no substitute for practical learning and this is often the best and quickest way students learn. Sidey also benefitted from fully-funded training, as part of The Vocational College’s apprenticeship programme, via its funding partner in Scotland, In-Training.
Robert Fitzpatrick of Sidey, said: “I’m very proud of the apprentices who have completed these qualifications. It’s a testament to their commitment of being successful within their roles that they have persevered and passed the courses. It’s now time for them to continue to make an impact and put into practice the good work their education via The Vocational College has begun.”
Paul Gray, business development manager at The Vocational College travelled to Perth in Scotland to present the certificates to the successful participants at Sidey. He later said: “Our training programme is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to make a career in the manufacturing and installation industry. It’s designed to best equip our students for the world of work, by getting the right balance between ‘learning’ and ‘doing’. They are already in the workplace, so know what to expect from real-life conditions and situations, but the discipline of studying a qualification provides will stand the students in good stead in the future.”
