WAKEFIELD METROGLAZE’S LOCAL DIMENSION SETS THE RECYCLING STANDARD
6th June 2012

A strictly maintained recycling system which has virtually eliminated waste going to landfill has helped Sheerframe window fabricator and installer Wakefield Metroglaze secure a string of refurb and newbuild projects.

The West Yorkshire based company, which specialises in the social housing, local authority and schools sectors, has been appointed to complete a variety of newbuild and refurbishment projects and the company believes it has gained an important competitive edge thanks to its recycling process in which all its waste PVC is reprocessed in nearby Selby. Waste is separated on-site at Metroglaze in Normanton near Wakefield and sent to the most suitable recyclers so virtually no waste is sent to landfill. It’s a separation process that takes in post-consumer windows and doors in timber, PVC, aluminium and steel which have been removed from properties of all ages, plus glass, hardware and – importantly – PVC production off-cuts.

By exclusively fabricating Sheerframe calcium-organic profile, Wakefield Metroglaze provides guaranteed lead-free PVC off-cuts and process waste which is sent back to extruder L.B. Plastics in Derbyshire for re-use in other window products. This means L.B. Plastics is able to manufacture window products which both contain recycled material and are calcium-organic stabilised.

Rob Smith fabrication manager at Wakefield Metroglaze says, “With the right systems in place, we’re demonstrating that landfill waste can be almost eliminated. This is particularly important for our public sector and social housing clients who rank a sustainable supply chain highly, especially councils who themselves face an enormous challenge with rising landfill tax rates.

“Recycling may not be new to our industry but doing it efficiently, systematically and across the board is not always routine practice. What is particularly significant in our system is the composition of our production off-cuts which we can guarantee as 100% lead-free - that means this waste PVC goes directly back to our supplier L.B. Plastics for re-use in other products.”

The company is a long established fabricator of Sheerframe systems which are manufactured in the UK from calcium-organic stabilised PVC in ISO 14001 registered production facilities. This helps deliver high performance windows for low energy homes, schools and public buildings which offer a virtually maintenance-free service life of at least 35 years, saving on the carbon emissions which would result from additional heating and window and door repairs.
