Windows come third in home
disaster league
5th September 2017
Windows and doors are among the biggest sources of home improvement disasters people are reporting to Citizens Advice, according to figures released this week.
The organisation says poor workmanship or late completions accounted two thirds of the 40,000 callers to its consumer service about substandard services last year and windows and doors came third of its league table of problems, with only roofing and fitted kitchens accounted for more complaints.
People contacted Citizens Advice wanting to know how to resolve their home improvement problems and their rights around refunds and compensation.
Chief Executive Gillian Guy said: “Thousands of people are turning to Citizen Advice for help after bad building work leaves them with a home improvements nightmare.
“People trying to improve their homes are finding them in a worse state than before they started. Dealing with botched jobs and unfinished work means many are left out of pocket and face huge disruptions to their lives.”
Among its advice to homeowners, the organisation says homeowners should seek recommendations or reference, look for members of a trade body with a code of practice, get multiple quotes.
