BBA inputs to new PAS 24

The introduction of the harmonised European Security Standards EN1627-30 for the security testing requirements of windows, shutters and doors has caused much controversy in the UK, due in part to the concerns over the lack of specific directional loading case tests and lock cylinder attack tests.

To address these issues the BBA is working with other industry bodies in the re-writing of the current PAS 24-1:1999 +A2:2011.

Endorsed by Secured by Design, the new PAS 24 will not only cover the enhanced security of doors but will also incorporate the essential elements of BS7950 which covers the enhanced security performance of windows for domestic applications.

This standard was superseded by the introduction of EN1627-30, but BS7950 still contains much of the specific test criteria which is favoured in the UK. BS7950 is due to be withdrawn in December 2011. The new PAS 24 is on track to be published in January 2012 and will, for the first time, include Bi-fold doors.

Therefore, fabricators will have two routes to compliance in the UK from January 2012 either via EN1627-30 with additional cylinder tests, or via the new PAS 24 which will already have these tests incorporated into it.

The BBA can certify fabricators using either of the two compliance methods. The opportunity of offering full BBA Certificates for bi-folds, and other doors, is also available as it addresses other performance criteria not picked up in the new PAS 24 such as U-values, durability and low threshold compliance.
