Tramway connection
3rd May 2016

More than 150 sq m of clear glass was manufactured and supplied by ROMAG for the newly upgraded arched Deansgate-Castleford passenger stop on the Manchester city centre Metrolink tramway system. Panels of clear Romag safety glass have also been installed to provide a protective safety walling feature on the new First Street Bridge, which spans the Deansgate Locks to provide access to and from the tram stop.

The installation used 25.5mm toughened sheets and heat soaked with SGP interlayer and polished edges.

Designed by Simpson Haugh and Partners, the project is part of Metrolink’s Second City Crossing project, and linked to a £1bn transport investment plan over the next two years.

Installation work was completed by Warrington-based structural steelwork and architectural metalwork designer and fabricator Shawton Engineering following delivery of the glass to their works and installed in the stair off site.

Shawton contracts manager Paul Hiscock said: “The high quality, high performance architectural glass will provide an impressive addition to the installation and will significantly contribute to enhancing the environment as well as public safety.

“Romag provided excellent advice and service when we were specifying glass for the project and delivered what was promised quickly and on time.”
