Gravesend Library’s Carnegie building in Kent has undergone a £2.5m restoration project 100 years after it first opened, including sash window renovation by Ventrolla.
They carried out a complete refurbishment of 25 sash windows, including producing some new replacement sills and boxes. A set of doors were also converted into windows with care taken to ensure the glazing bar profile and the horn matched the originals.
Project Architect from Clay Architecture Camilla Prizeman commented: “The windows were in a terrible condition before the project began. It was difficult for the Ventrolla surveyor to assess the work needed due to limited access to areas of the building. When the installers arrived on site, additional work was discovered and Ventrolla adapted quickly to the demands of this complicated project.”
The library comprises the two end terraces of a five-bay Georgian terrace, which were knocked down and rebuilt using the same bricks as part of the major redevelopment. Ventrolla salvaged the sash windows, restored them and created bespoke replacement parts where needed and then placed them back in their original position.
Whilst repairing the sash windows, the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) was also installed to the sash windows, improving the energy efficiency of the windows by eradicating draughts and rattles.
The complete library project took over a year to complete, but the library is now open to the public.
