Buckingham Palace goes double glazed
The GGF has congratulated Buckingham Palace for its reported plans to install double glazing.
Not only will this bring down the royal family's energy costs by keeping heat inside the building, it will also help them to improve their green credentials.
While the average household can save around £135 per year by fitting energy efficient windows, it is expected that Buckingham Palace will benefit considerably more than that.
Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, including: 19 state rooms; 52 royal and guest bedrooms; 188 staff bedrooms; 92 offices; and 78 bathrooms. While not all of them are heated simultaneously, dignitaries from overseas can’t be expected to be entertained in chilly surroundings.
“The general public is becoming increasingly aware of the cost of energy, and how energy efficient windows can help keep that cost down,” Nigel Rees, GGF chief executive, said. “With thermal imaging cameras in widespread use, the Queen can’t afford to have people filming the palace letting heat out of the windows – heat that was paid for by the taxpayer!
“Therefore, having double glazing installed is a wise move. Furthermore, modern double glazing can be discreet and won’t impact on the palace’s historic facade.
“Of course, what we need to know now, is whether she’ll go for top-hung-over-fixed casements, or push the boat out and go for double-hung sashes. If she orders now, she may be able to cash-in on the summer deals, and even have her front and back resi doors thrown in for free.”
