TECHNAL TO SUPPLY GLAZING SYSTEMS FOR NEW £60m COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

Architectural aluminium glazing specialists, Technal, in partnership with fabricator Norking Aluminium, have been awarded the £1.5m glazing contract for a new £60m community hospital in Pontefract, which is now under construction.

The diagnostic and treatment centre for Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust is part of the largest PPP hospital development in Yorkshire, developed by Consort Healthcare – a joint venture by Balfour Beatty and Haden Young. The architects are Avanti Architects.

Around 500 windows from Technal’s FXi casement range are being supplied for the scheme to Secured by Design standards and to meet the architects’ ventilation strategy.

Technal’s MX Visible Grid curtain walling is also being used throughout the new hospital, which includes a full height three-storey atrium, sections overlooking the courtyards and a central ‘street’. The glazing will be fitted with low E glass to the north elevation and solar control glass for the south, west and east façades.

Scheduled to open towards the end of 2009, the new 21,000 sqm hospital will replace outdated buildings at Pontefract General Infirmary with a landmark building to transform patient care. The design is for a low-level outpatients’ building wrapped by a higher acute wing with views towards the town centre. Generous courtyards and shallow depths will ensure all occupied rooms and ward bays benefit from natural light, ventilation and pleasant views, using Technal’s glazing systems.

The windows are being supplied in a range of configurations – FXi46 pivots and FXi65 tilt/turn systems for ventilation and ease of cleaning on the upper floors; FXi65 fixed lights for maximising natural light, and FXi65 top hung open-out windows for additional ventilation.

Technal’s CD commercial doors will also be used for access and fire exit doors and as auto sliding and auto swing door sets.

The new hospital will have an A&E department, diagnostic facilities with radiology and endoscopy, midwife-led maternity services, outpatient facilities, day surgery unit, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and other specialist facilities. It has been designed to be highly flexible with the opportunity for change to reflect future advances in healthcare.

Technal’s FXi range is a fully integrated window suite which uses a technically advanced framing system with clean, narrow site lines. It is available in three module sizes – 46mm, 52mm and 65mm, giving architects and contractors the flexibility to deliver enhanced thermal efficiency and to meet project-specific requirements for aesthetics, performance, cost, security and durability.

Features include the option of single or dual colours, a common range of profiles and accessories to simplify specification, and flush EPDM gaskets to guarantee quality and enhance the appearance of the window. The range can be supplied in a full range of configurations, including fixed lights, top, side and bottom hung, and tilt/turn, and pivot windows are also available for FXi46.
